Survey of the Training and Employment Status of Physical Therapist in Korea

Abstract
In order to ascertain the aspects of the physical therapist training system which require improvement and also to provide important data for use in setting up health service manpower planning, our country¢¥s physical therapist training and employment status has been studied and analyzed.
The objects of the study are 787 physical therapists, the total number of persons licensed by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs between 1965 and 1980. The parameters studied and analyzed are the training institution, period of education, employing institution, geographical location of employment, and various characteristics of physical therapists. In order to gather data for the change in number of trainees and employed therapists, a regression analysis was carried out.
As of 1980, the total number of employed physical therapists was 407, of whom 156 (38.3%) were male and 251 (61.7%) female. Emigrants working or living abroad comprised 82 persons while in Korea, 325 therapists were employed. Of these, 171(52.6%) were concentrated in Seoul, showing an unbalanced regional distribution.
In 1980; the total distribution of medical institutions was 6,406 with those who should be providing physical therapist services (in general hospital, hospital, orthopedic and neurosurgical clinics) totalling 574, of which 108(18.8%) actually employed a total of 234 (29.7%) physical therapists.
The results of a comparison of the qualification system of physical therapists in our country with those of the United States of America and Japan, show that, in order to improve knowledge of related conditions and their treatment, the education system here should be gradually changed from a two year to a four year university program and a system for providing oppotunities for continuing education of existing physical therapists
instituted as a short-term policy.
